Damage and coping with crows

Last update date April 1, 2024

Intimidation and attack by crows

During the crow breeding season (spring to early summer), parent glass may threaten or attack people passing near nests or chicks to protect eggs and chicks against people passing near nests or chicks.
In that case, there are the following steps (click to move to the detailed description).

Crows gather (the garbage is ruined)

Crows gather due to kitchen garbage, which often feeds, and food from abandoned pets. Eliminating crows is ineffective because other crows will gather if there is food.
If you have any problems, you can take the following steps (click to go to the detailed description).

Response to threats and attacks by crows

1 Keep away from that location (nests and chicks)

  • If you move away from nests and chicks, the threats and attacks will subside.
  • Crows attack people from behind, so let's leave without turning their back to the parent glass.

Crows take the following threatening actions before an attack. Be careful of signs of threats so that you are not attacked.

  1. Peeping the branches and squeaking beak
  2. Stop on a tree and screaming towards people
  3. Flying around the head while squealing

2 Crows protect the back of the head because they attack from behind

  • Crows attack by kicking the back of the head with their feet from behind, so protecting the occipitation can prevent attacks. Therefore, protect the back of the head with a hat, bag, umbrella, etc.

3 To deal with the causative nest

It is best not to approach the nest, but if there is a lot of traffic or it is difficult to detour, consult the owner or manager of the place where the nest is located (such as a tree).

Corresponding to nests includes posting alert posters and removing nests. What action to take is up to the owner or manager of the location.

About alerting poster

Warning poster

We will lend you a warning poster for crows. As the number of copies that can be borrowed is limited, please refer to environmental activity business section (Phone: 045-671-3448).
In addition to lending, you can download the data on the right and use it.

4 Urgently request the city to collect and dispose of the nesting vina.

If the chick immediately after nesting is near the ground, the parent glass may attack people approaching to protect the chicks.
If the parent glass repeatedly threatens and attacks a person and there is a risk of damage such as injury to a person, the city will urgently collect and dispose of chicks. Please refer to environmental activity business section (Phone: 045-671-3448).

The nesting vina has the same appearance as the parent glass, but is characterized by its red mouth.

I'm just tired and resting, I'll move on my own after a while. If there is no threat or attack caused by the parent glass, leave it alone.

Dealing with crows gathering (garbage)

1 Observe the manners of garbage disposal (using scattering prevention nets, etc.)

Put it in a container with a lid or put a net to cover the entire garbage.
When putting a net, place a weight such as a block at the end of the net so that garbage is not pulled out of the gap.

You will have to manage the garbage collection point in each area.

2 Make sure that kitchen garbage cannot be seen from the outside of the garbage bag

If measures cannot be taken using a container with a lid, etc., cover the kitchen garbage with other garbage so that it cannot be seen from the outside of the garbage bag.
Crows come together when they see kitchen garbage from outside the bag to look for food.

3 Do not feed (do not leave pet food outside)

Feeding causes many crows to gather and cause many troubles such as feces damage and noise.
It is not preferable for crows because the ability to live on their own will be weakened, so it is not desirable for crows.
Pets and other food should be cleaned up as soon as you finish eating.

Measures in Yokohama City

All wild birds and beasts, including crows, cannot be captured without permission under the Wildlife Protection and Management Law. For this reason, crows cannot be exterminated if crows are gathering due to the lack of manners of garbage, or simply because they are scary or noisy. In addition, even if crows gathering on food (garbage), it is not effective because another crow will gather again as long as there is food.
For this reason, Yokohama City has been working on separate collection and reduction of garbage, and has reduced the number of crows by taking measures against food (garbage). It is very important to follow the manners of garbage disposal throughout the area, such as by utilizing nets to prevent scattering of garbage. (In the 2008 survey, the number of crows in the city is compared to 10 years ago. It is about half, and the number has decreased further in the 2013 survey.)

In the event of a threat or attack, the following businesses are being implemented as countermeasures against damage.

  1. Collection of crow's nesting vina
  2. Lending of crow alert posters (providing data)

In addition, as for the details, please see "Crows Damage Countermeasures Implementation Guidelines (PDF: 126KB)".
