Bible and Western Studies Collection

The Western Studies Collection is mainly English language books and dictionaries, mainly English, published in the Meiji period. In the digital archive, you can list about 110 collections by entering "Western Studies Collection" as a keyword and search.

In 1872, the Council of Christ New Church Missionary in Japan was held in Yokohama, where representatives of J.C. Hebon, S.R Brown, D.C. Green, N. Brown, D.C. Green, N. Brown, D.C. Green, N. Brown, D.C. Green, and N. Brown. Until then, partial translations of the Bible had begun to be published, but this was the first time that the translation of the entire Bible was started. Translations and publications were carried out in separate volumes, and when translation was possible. A series of translations is called "Meiji Gen Translation".


"English-Japanese vocabulary intact"

Shokichi Shibata, Takashi Koyasu / Hentaisha 1873 (Meiji 6)
A full-fledged dictionary boasting the largest number ever, with about 55,000 headlines. It is the first time for an English-Japanese dictionary that about 500 illustrations have been published. There is a strong tendency for figures to be inserted into technical terms related to ships and architecture, names of flora and fauna, and shape terms. With the financial support of Hirayatsu Tanaka, a raw silk merchant in Yokohama, who is known as "Tenka no Itohachi," he ordered printing presses and European prints from Shanghai. The publisher Nisshosha is a printing shop founded by editors Shibata and Koyasu in Yokohama for this dictionary.
