Redevelopment of Konan Sakurado

Konan Sakurado is one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in Yokohama, and has a long history since the early Showa era. In addition, although it is loved by the local community, such as the “Konan Cherry Blossom Festival” every year, the following issues arise.

  • Risk of falling trees due to aging of cherry blossoms (approximately 80 years)
  • Pavement destruction due to rising roots
  • Impediments to pedestrians and cars

In order to solve these problems, we conducted a street tree diagnosis in FY2011 and positioned the section where cherry blossoms with a high risk of falling trees are concentrated as priority maintenance areas, and shared the views of the government with the residents regarding the direction of Sakuramichi redevelopment. We held an opinion exchange meeting twice in 2012 so that we could share and discussed the direction of Sakuramichi redevelopment.

Based on the two exchange meetings, the following is to ensure pedestrian safety, and that even if some of the aging cherry trees are left, the risk of broken branches will remain and eventually have to be cut down. It was concluded.

Cut all existing cherry blossoms in the priority maintenance area, set up a sidewalk of about 2 meters on the east side and a road shoulder of about 1 meter on the west side, and plant new cherry blossoms on the east sidewalk at equal intervals based on the location of the existing cherry blossoms To do.

Based on the above, Konan Public Works Office gathered opinions to the relevant Neighborhood Associations by circulate the redevelopment plan, etc., and decided on a redevelopment plan for Konan Sakurado.

After that, we distributed the "Notice about Konan Sakurado Redevelopment Plan" to local stakeholders.
