About redevelopment of Konan Sakurado
Konan Sakurado is one of the most famous cherry blossom spots in Yokohama City, and has a long history since the early Showa era. In addition, the “Konan Cherry Blossom Festival” is held every year, and it is loved by the local community, but the following issues have arisen.
- The danger of falling trees due to the aging of cherry blossoms (about 80 years)
- Paving destruction due to rooting
- Traffic obstacles to pedestrians and cars
In order to solve these problems, we conducted a street tree diagnosis in FY2011 and positioned the section where cherry blossoms with a high risk of falling trees are concentrated as priority maintenance areas, and the government's approach to the direction of Sakuramichi redevelopment We held two exchange meetings in 2012 to discuss the direction of Sakuramichi redevelopment so that we could share them.

Based on the two exchange meetings, the following conclusions are given because the safety of pedestrians is ensured, and even if some of the aging cherry blossoms are left, there is a risk of broken branches and eventually they must be cut down. Was.
All existing cherry blossoms in the priority maintenance area are cut down, a sidewalk of about 2 meters on the east side and a shoulder of about 1 meter on the west side, and a new cherry tree is planted on the east sidewalk at equal intervals based on the location of the existing cherry blossoms To do.
Based on the above, Konan Public Works Office has decided on a plan to redevelop Konan Sakurado by convening opinions to all concerned Neighborhood Associations.

Regarding redevelopment work in the priority maintenance area, a contract was concluded with a contractor on August 30, 2013, and the site will be started from late September. Construction starts with cutting and rooting of existing cherry blossoms, maintenance of road gutters, redevelopment of sidewalks, repair of road pavements, and planting of new sunlight cherry trees, are scheduled to be completed in March 2014.
