Relief system for COVID-19 vaccination

Last update date April 1, 2024

What is a relief system?

  • Vaccinations is important to prevent infectious diseases, but it can cause health hazards (becoming ill or remaining disability).
Although extremely rare, a relief system has been established because it is not possible to eliminate health hazards caused by side reactions.
  • The Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare recognizes that if a person who has received Vaccinations (regular vaccination for Class A and B diseases) based on the Vaccination Law suffers a health hazard, the health hazard is due to the vaccination. In some cases, benefits will be paid by the municipalities. For procedures required for application, the municipalities that registered resident certificate when they were vaccinated will be the contact point.
  • In addition to regular vaccinations based on the Vaccination Law, vaccinations can be given according to various situations, such as preventing individuals from getting infected or becoming seriously ill. This is called "optional vaccination." (e.g., seasonal flu vaccine, epidemic parotitis, etc.)
If a person who has received the voluntary vaccination suffers a health hazard, you will need to apply for a drug side effect relief system based on the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency Act. The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) will be the contact point for procedures required for application.

Depending on the date of vaccination, the eligible relief system differs depending on the date of vaccination.
