Tokiwa Park
Last Updated February 16, 2024
At the end of the Meiji era, the population increased rapidly due to the development of the Yokohama city area, and the shortage of park facilities became a problem.
Kinnosuke Okano, a wealthy family in Hodogaya, invested his own assets to create a villa "Tokiwa-en" owned by the Tokiwadai area, and opened it to the public in October 1914. .
In the wild garden, there were flower gardens, Bairin, bamboo forests, zelkova forests, vineyards and poultry farms. He also breeds bees and cultivates edible frogs.
There were two playgrounds with a size of about 2,600 tsubo, and nationwide competitions such as motorcycle races were held.
During the flower season, stores were lined up, and oden, sushi, yokan, wine, etc. were sold, and it was crowded with many people. Especially when the cherry blossoms bloom, the slope leading to the park was full of people, and it was said that it was placed in the middle of the slope to the police station.
It is a remnant that the bus stop is still "Tokiwa-en entrance" and "Tokiwa-en-mae".
The current Tokiwa Park was opened by Yokohama City in 1942 by acquiring a part (about one-sixth) near the entrance of Tokiwa-en. Even now, this green park is popular as a place for sports and relaxation for Hodogaya residents.
