Fire is strictly prohibited during home oxygen therapy (warning)

Last Updated September 13, 2021

Handling of fire in home oxygen therapy

Overview of this matter

High concentrations of oxygen used during home oxygen therapy have the property of helping burn (combustion), and the use of surrounding fire (cigarettes, ashtrays, stoves, stoves, etc.) is strictly prohibited.

In the past, there have been accidents in which patients receiving home oxygen therapy die due to a fire.
Patients, their families, and those around you should be careful not to cause similar accidents.

In addition, oxygen concentrators are safe devices if used appropriately, so we ask for the understanding of patients receiving treatment.

Matters to be noted by patients and their families (reprinted from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare website)

Patients receiving home oxygen therapy and their families should fully understand the following points regarding the handling of fire when inhaling oxygen, and use an oxygen concentrator.

1.If a fire such as tobacco is brought close while inhaling high concentrations of oxygen, it will ignite tubes and clothes, causing severe burns and fire in houses.
2.When using an oxygen concentrator, etc., do not place fire within 2m around the instrument. Never smoke, especially while inhaling oxygen.
3.If you pay attention to the handling of fire and use it properly according to the instruction manual, oxygen will not burn the tube or clothes or cause a fire, so do not be over afraid and inhale oxygen according to the doctor's instructions Please do.
