Prepare for electricity fires caused by typhoons and heavy rains

Last Updated July 9, 2020

If a power outage occurs due to a typhoon or heavy rain, there is a danger of a fire (energized fire) when electricity is restored.
Pay attention to the following points to prevent energized fires.

Response in the event of a power outage

  • During a power outage, turn off the electrical equipment and unplug the power plug from the outlet.
  • If you go out during a power outage, drop the breaker.

Recovery from a power outage

  • Use electrical equipment after confirming safety, such as whether electrical equipment is not damaged due to water leakage, wiring and cords are not damaged, and whether flammable materials are nearby.
  • If you find any abnormalities such as smoke or off-flavors, immediately drop the breaker and contact the nearest fire department.

※Even if there is no external damage to the building or electrical equipment, a fire may occur after a long period of time after re-energizing due to damage to wiring in the wall or failure inside the electrical equipment.

Other preparations

  • Be careful when using fire.
  • Be prepared in advance so that you can make a reliable 119 call. Some telephones, such as IP phones and telephones with fax functions, may become unusable due to power outages.
  • If you live in a condominium, etc., check the evacuation route or fire brigade entry route because the power outage may cause the door with an electric lock and automatic doors to lose its function and become impassable. Let's go.
