Friendship Exchange City

Exchange with Shimokawa-cho, Hokkaido

Totsuka Ward and Shimokawa-cho, Hokkaido, are engaged in activities such as carbon offset at local events, mainly in the Kawakami district of Totsuka-ku and the Totsuka Ward Office in 2011 signed a friendship exchange agreement.
Every year, we conduct exchanges focusing on local activities, such as youth exchanges that accept elementary school students with each other and conducting craft classes using thinned wood from Shimokawacho at eco events.

Every year, the community plays a leading role, and exchanges are held to accept elementary school students.
In summer, children from Shimokawa-cho visit Totsuka toured facilities that are engaged in environmental activities and pear picking.In winter, children from Tozuka go to Shimokawacho toured woody biomass facilities, ski, and shiitake hunting. I am doing.

Use of thinned wood in Shimokawa Town

In eco-events, inhabitants of a ward participate in making license plates (※) and key chains using thinned wood from Shimokawa-cho.
※It is used as a license plate in a row of cherry blossom trees on the Kashio River.

A forest

A forest

As part of the Friendship Exchange Agreement, we concluded the "Totsuka no Mori" agreement in 2013.
This agreement provides naming rights (naming right) as "Totsuka no Mori" in a part of Shimokawa-cho-owned forest and raises mutual environmental awareness.
At the time of the conclusion of the agreement, five larch trees were planted in the "Totsuka no Mori" in response to the carbon offsets that we worked on at five local events in the city in 2012.

About Shimokawa-cho, Hokkaido

Shimokawa-cho position

Shimokawa-cho is located in the northern part of Hokkaido, about 100 km north of Asahikawa City, and about 90% of the town's area (64,420ha) is forested, blessed with rich and beautiful nature and forest resources.
In winter, it can rarely be minus 30 degrees Celsius, and it is a snowy and cold region where snowfall continues from November to March.
In addition, it was selected as a SDGs Future City in FY2018 due to projects such as the use of renewable energy, mainly forest biomass.
