Projects to foster a culture in which children drink tap water

Last Updated August 7, 2020

Water Works Bureau will support the direct connection of indoor drinking faucets in elementary and junior high schools.

1.Current status

School indoor drinking fountains are supplied via receiving tanks and elevated water tanks. Due to the declining birthrate and the holidays on Saturday, the stay time in the receiving tank increases, and mainly in summer, the water warmed by the outside air comes out of the faucet, so some children feel that tap water is not delicious. .

2.Business description

The Water Works Bureau and the Board of Education will jointly improve the method of direct water supply to the faucets in indoor drinking fountains using the pressure of water pipes to supply cold and high quality water to children, increase trust in tap water, and foster a culture in which children who will lead the future drink tap water directly from the faucet.

3.Status after direct water supply

We select some schools that have constructed direct water supply for indoor drinking fountains every year and conduct a questionnaire survey. According to a questionnaire survey (57 schools, 26,755 students) at schools that provided direct water supply in fiscal 2005, fiscal 19-24 and fiscal 2019, elementary school student said, "I think it became more delicious than before summer vacation." About 80% of students feel "a little" and improve the image of tap water.
