Renewable energy

Last Updated March 1, 2024

About 98% of total greenhouse gas emissions in Yokohama city area is carbon dioxide (CO2).
Since CO2 emissions are largely due to the energy consumption of petroleum-based fuels, electricity, and city gas, it is important to reduce energy consumption and increase the proportion of renewable energy that does not rely on fossil fuels.
Water Works Bureau uses many pumps to supply tap water, which consumes a lot of electricity.
For this reason, we are actively introducing solar power generation and small hydroelectric power generation to build an environmentally friendly water supply system.

※Renewable energy
Among non-fossil energy sources, it is recognized that they can be used permanently as energy sources. Unlike fossil fuels, it is characterized by constant regeneration and supply of energy sources and less burden on the global environment. Specifically, solar, hydro, and wind are mentioned.

Photovoltaic power generation facilities

The solar energy (light) is generated by receiving solar power panels.
In Water Works Bureau, solar panels are installed on the roof of the government building and on the following facilities.

  • Filteration pond: movable arch lids to prevent foreign substances from entering and reduce chlorine consumption.
  • Sediment Pond: Light shielding plate to prevent the occurrence of algae
Installation status of photovoltaic power generation facilities (as of the end of FY2022)
Name of the facility Power generation capacity (kilowatts) Operating year

Kikuna Water Plaza 3 2007
Kawai Purification Plant (Cerarocca) 336 2014
Nakamura Water Plaza 10 2014
Total 1,390

Small hydroelectric power generation facilities

The water wheel is turned using the power of the water flowing through the water pipe, and the generator connected to the water wheel is rotated to generate electricity.
