Q & A about COVID-19 (about water quality of tap water)
Last Updated January 19, 2021
Coronavirus is generally known to be detoxified (loss infectivity) by disinfection with chlorine or the like.
Tap water is required to be chlorinated by the Water Supply Law and to maintain an appropriate chlorine concentration and supply it to the customer's faucet.
City of Yokohama, Water Works Bureau measures 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 43 faucets in the city to confirm that tap water maintains an appropriate chlorine concentration, so tap water will not be infected with the new coronavirus.
One of the basics of infectious disease countermeasures such as COVID-19 and influenza is "frequent hand washing". When returning home from the go, before and after cooking, and before meals, please use "frequent hand washing" using familiar tap water.

Coronavirus is generally known to be detoxified (loss infectivity) by disinfection with chlorine or the like.
Tap water supplied by City of Yokohama, Water Works Bureau maintains an appropriate chlorine concentration based on the Water Supply Law, so tap water will not be infected with COVID-19.
However, when wiping with tap water, chlorine in tap water is consumed by contact with cloth, goods, and air used, so it is difficult to maintain a sufficient chlorine concentration for eradication of the new coronavirus.
Chlorine bleach is effective as a countermeasure against new coronavirus when wiping. It is effective to dilute chlorine bleach for kitchens with tap water (about 0.05% as the concentration of sodium hypochlorite).

It describes how to make sodium hypochlorite solution of 0.05% or more.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, which is in charge of the water supply business, stated in the "Response to COVID-19 infection" (office communication dated February 17, 2020), as a countermeasure against new coronavirus infection performed by water utilities. It has stated that measures in accordance with the Guidelines for Countermeasures against New Influenza Virus (revised version)" are effective.
This guideline states that it is important to continue the current chlorination of chlorination and monitoring of residual chlorine concentration even during the epidemic season. City of Yokohama, Water Works Bureau continues its current efforts.
Going forward, we will continue to respond appropriately based on the notification of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
