About bees

Last Updated August 29, 2022

Hachi situation in Yokohama

Every year from July to October.
"The bee made a nest, but what should I do?"
The consultation is sent to Health and Welfare Center every day.

Bees that often build nests at home include hornets and paper wasps.
Hornets and paper wasps are beneficial insects that catch and eat plant pests.
However, nesting in a place close to us can be dangerous insects.

Bees with a lot of consultation

  • The shape of the nest is a lotus fruit type
  • There is no outer cover, and the burrow is exposed.
  • You can see a lot of burrows from the bottom

Discover hornets early and get rid of them early.

Every year from July to October, Health and Welfare Center receives consultations on "bees have built nests, but what to do?"
At that time, nests are often growing, and they have to outsource extermination to a specialist, which costs a considerable amount of money.
Until the first worker bee emerges from April to June, it is time to nest with one queen bee, so if you can find a nest during that time, you can get rid of it relatively safely and at low cost .
In order to reduce the cost burden as much as possible, try to check places where nests are likely to be built in early spring (April to June) (see "Places that are easy to build nests")!

Let's check around the house from April to June!

A place where nests can be easily built

  • Inside the ceiling, inside the wall (only hornets)
  • Under the floor, inside the door pocket (only hornets)
  • In the fence and planting
  • In the cave of a tree (only hornets)

When checking the nest, be careful not to approach the nest suddenly, do not shake, or make noise nearby!

If you find a nest

Let's deal with it while it's small! If the nest is left as it is, the nest will grow larger and the number of worker bees will increase. In that case, it will be difficult to get rid of it and cost to get rid of it.

When exterminate

About consultation counter

Although Health and Welfare Center does not exterminate nests, we provide consultation on hornets and wasps, guidance to exterminators, and lend protective clothing and equipment for extermination by themselves. For more information, please contact Health and Welfare Center Health Sanitation Division.
For information about bees, please refer to the leaflet "Beware of beehives! (PDF: 1,791KB) "(updated in June 2022).

About insecticide

insecticide should purchase items exclusively for bee extermination or for extermination of flies and mosquitoes (including pyrethroids as active ingredients) at nearby supermarkets and pharmacies.
Recently, insecticide for bee removal has been sold. It has a strong injection power, and the drug sprays linearly about 3 to 5 meters. If the drug hits, the bees will eventually fall (note that some injection times may be short) 。
When using insecticide, be sure to inform nearby homes and those who pass nearby that they will use drugs to get rid of bees.
For information on extermination of paper wasps, see the page on "Extermination of paper wasps".
