I sent Bali Myna and oats to New Caledonia

In 1989, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Yokohama municipal administration, the southern province of New Caledonia donated the Kagu, an endemic species of New Caledonia to Yokohama City, conservation and the Southern State Government of New CaledKagu. As part of this exchange, Yokohama sent six Bali Myna and two flies to the Michel Corbason Zoological and Botanical Park in New Caledonia on January 23. We hope that these birds will live and breed in New Caledonia and serve as a bridge for friendship with Yokohama City.

I sent Bali Myna to Indonesia

Photo of Bali Myna in the transport box

Preservation and Research Center is engaged in breeding under breeding in Bali Myna, which is endangered only in Bali, Indonesia. Since 2004, we have been working with the Government of Indonesia to support the wild restoration project in the western Bali National Park, which is located in the habitat of western Bali National Park. In order to help them return to the wild in the country, we have continued to send Bali Myna, which had been bred in Japan, mainly in Preservation and Research Center, and on November 7, we sent 15 Bali Myna birds. The total number sent so far has reached 160 birds.

The birds sent will be paired with Bali Myna, which is bred at the conservation facility in Indonesia, and the descendants will be released into the wild.
I am looking forward to seeing the children of Bali Myna, who grew up in Yokohama, flying around the forest of Bali.

Holding Science School

State of science school

The Preservation and Research Center Science School, which is held every summer, is held for three days from July 27 to 29, with a total of 31 participants.
This year, they also experienced DNA extraction experiments and listened to explanations about the current situation in the wild and conservation's efforts under breeding while watching rare animals such as Tapir, Bali Myna and Kagu.
Through this experience, I hope that you can understand what kind of activities Preservation and Research Center is doing to protect endangered species.

Spring in Japanese Night Heron

A photo of Japanese Night Heron holding a twig

Japanese Night Heron is a migratory bird that flies to Japan in spring. Preservation and Research Center is focusing on this bird's conservation because the number of populations is decreasing and there is concern about extinction. In 2015, she succeeded in breeding for the first time in Japan, and chicks have nested for three consecutive years since then.
The two males who grew up in the first year still live with their brothers, because they don't have a good pairing partner. Nevertheless, around the end of March, when the breeding season begins, you will be able to see the nesting twigs that are nesting materials. Looking at that figure, I hope that a good partner can be found early and lead to breeding.
