Driving Environment Improvement Project (Northwest Aoba Ward) to maintain and enhance bus routes

Due to a decrease in the number of route bus users and a shortage of drivers due to a declining birthrate and aging population, flights have been reduced in urban areas, making it difficult to maintain the current service level of the bus network. Therefore, in this project, in cooperation with bus operators, promotes the improvement of operating efficiency and the development of a driving environment to promote the redistribute of management resources resulting from it.

State of the presentation ceremony

Initiatives to maintain bus routes in the northwestern part of Aoba Ward

Yokohama City and Tokyu Bus are making efforts to maintain bus routes in the northwestern part of Aoba Ward. Through the introduction of articulated buses, we will make efforts to improve the efficiency of major bus routes and redistribute the resulting management resources to other routes.

Overview of Efforts

Background of Initiatives: Decrease in bus service levels due to a decrease in the number of passengers and a shortage of crew members

In recent years, the number of bus users has decreased due to the declining birthrate and aging population and changes in lifestyles. In addition, due to the decrease and aging of large two-type license holders, the number of bus crew members is also insufficient, and it is necessary to adjust the number of bus operated flights (reduction of flights, etc.) according to actual usage.
In addition, there is a tendency to refrain from telework and going out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the balance of route buses is becoming more severe, resulting in a decrease in the number of users. → Deterioration of income and expenditures → Reduced flights → There may be a vicious cycle of a further decrease in the number of users.

What we aim for: Maintain bus network by improving operational efficiency and redistribution

Therefore, Yokohama City and Tokyu Bus have introduced articulated buses on routes with a large number of buses, and by reducing the number of flights to the extent acceptable while securing transportation capacity, the management resources of the bus operators created will be redistributed to other routes and maintained as much as possible throughout the area.
※In order to improve the income and expenditure, it is inevitable that flights will be reduced according to the actual usage, and even if a articulated bus is introduced, the service level of the entire area may decrease in the future.
