[Column] I thought about ethical consumption from a student's point of view.

The RCE Yokohama Youth Federation is an organization in which university students in Yokohama play a central role in promoting regional sustainability under the motto "Regional Love". We participated in the activities of the co-creation platform "Otagai Hama" in collaboration with citizens, companies, universities, and governments in Yokohama, and from May to December 2020, we performed on a talk program "Yokokashi" that talks from a student's perspective and distributed videos on various themes. In September 2020, we also distributed a video on the theme of ethical consumption, but in the wake of this campaign, we will deliver the second edition as the "Yokokashi Special Edition". Prior to that, I had you write a column this time.

In Yokohama, until January 31st, "Let's start! We are holding an ethical consumption campaign in Yokohama. Prior to this campaign, we, the RCE Yokohama Youth Federation, delivered live programs on ethical consumption in September. This time, I will tell you what you talked about in the video delivered in an easy-to-understand manner.

At the RCE Yokohama Youth Federation, students who attend universities in Yokohama gather and engage in various activities with the keyword Yokohama LOVE. What kind of image do we university students have about ethical consumption?

Ethical consumption refers to the selection and purchase of products that are environmentally and socially friendly. Even if you don't know the word ethical consumption itself, many people may experience consumption that applies to ethical consumption. Most of the youth federation did not know about the word ethical consumption, but all members had once purchased products with certification mark.

On the other hand, there were many opinions that we would choose products based on price and design inevitably, in terms of whether we are always conscious of ethical consumption. Therefore, we thought that the reason why ethical consumption is not very popular yet is that consumers have few opportunities to know the meaning of certification marks. As a solution to this, post an explanation of the certification mark at a supermarket, have them learn about ethical consumption while shopping, and hold a tour of visiting shops in Yokohama city to try ethical consumption. Was

After delivering the video, I became more interested in ethical consumption, and my daily consumption behavior changed slightly. For example, when buying fish at supermarkets, I began to pick and buy fish with MSC's "Eco Label of the Sea" or ASC label. In addition, when purchasing food items in boxes, we now check for FSC certification, which is a mark to protect the forest.

I have a video distribution and "Let's get started! Through the "Ethical Consumption" campaign in Yokohama, I learned the importance of ethical consumption and realized the joy and fulfillment that I can easily contribute to society in everyday life. What has changed significantly in me is that when I found a certification mark that I didn't know, I was willing to look at the meaning of that mark. There are more certification marks than we think. "Let's get started! Participate in the “Ethical Consumption” campaign in Yokohama and practice ethical consumption happily.
