[Column] Ethical consumption and World Fish 2nd

Hiyoshi, an environmental counselor, who works as an environmental counselor, writes a column on MSC's "dispatch lecture/off site lecture Eco Label" on a daily basis.

In the first column, I wrote that the number of fish is decreasing in the world, but I would like to explain that there is a very good approach to solving this situation.

Do you know of the (NPO) Ocean Management Council, headquartered in London, UK? In English, the NPO, called the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC for short), was established by WWF and Unilever Corporation (NGO) WWF and Unilever, which took seriously the collapse of cod fish in Canada in 1992. The organization has established principles on sustainable fisheries and has created a mechanism to label fish (marine products) caught in fisheries that have been certified to meet these principles.

In MSC-certified fisheries, there are many cases in which the amount of fish is recovered while fishing, and it plays a major role in resource recovery. For example, the sardine fishery in Spain did not have a good resource condition 10 years ago, but with the increase in MSC certified fisheries, the amount of resources has recovered to its maximum level.
The number of MSC-certified fisheries now account for 15% of the world's natural fisheries industry (from MSC 2019 report), and there is an expectation for the recovery of global marine resources.

By the way, what are good things about products with MSC labels for us?
The author understands the benefits are "good quality of the fish" and "the fish is 'real'". This is because fish with MSC label do not mix with other fish, from fishing grounds to lined up in supermarkets, and their origins and routes are clear. And I believe that being able to play a part in ethical consumption that creates a sustainable society as a consumer, will lead to a very good social contribution.
However, there are still few people who know this MSC label in Japan. When you choose seafood, why don't you ask the shop to see if there is anything with this label?
