Tokaido Highway in Yokohama City
~Introduction to post offices~
The Tokaido, which connects Edo and Kyoto, played a major role in the exchange of people, goods and culture during the Edo period.
In Yokohama City, Kanagawa-juku and Hodogaya-juku opened in 1601 when the inn station / horse system was established on the Tokaido, and Tozuka-juku was opened in 1604.
Along the old Tokaido, which passes through Tsurumi Ward, Kanagawa Ward, Nishi Ward, Hodogaya Ward and Totsuka Ward, there are many historic sites and historic sites such as temples, shrines and temples, Ichirizuka, and Honjin.

This post town was in front of the steep slope "Gontazaka", which is said to be the first difficult place after leaving Edo. Therefore, it is said that many travelers took a rest in this post town and then challenged Sakoshi E.

At that time, the journey of the trip was generally considered to be about ten ri (40 km). This post town is located just 10 ri from Nihonbashi, and in the early morning it was crowded as the first post town where travelers departed from Nihonbashi stayed.

At the Kanagawa Tokaido Renaissance Promotion Council, together with local residents, is making use of the history and culture of the Tokaido, and the Road and Highway Bureau Planning Division is also promoting activities as a secretariat.
