No. 3 Insured Person

Last Updated March 16, 2023

What is the third insured person?

The third insured person is a person who meets all of the following conditions. If any one of them no longer applies, you will no longer be the third insured at that time.

  1. Be between 20 and 60 years old
  2. Being a spouse dependent on the second insured person
  3. Being not a second insured person

For example, the third insured person falls under the following cases:

  • When you get married and become dependent on your husband (wife)
  • When one of the dual-income couples retire and enter the other support
  • When you have received employment insurance (Unemployment Insurance) and become dependent on your husband (wife)
  • When the husband (wife) of the first insured person who supports his wife (husband) finds employment and becomes the second insured person.

Qualifications for the third insured cannot be obtained simply by being supported by a company employee or public employee who has joined Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin). When you acquire the qualification of the third insured person, or when the type changes to the third insured person, it is necessary to submit a report.

Notifications relating to No. 3 insured persons (qualification and loss of qualification, change of Address, change of name, change of type, etc.) were made at the ward office National Pension Plan Section until March 31, 2002, but from April 1, 2002, the company (business owner) and mutual aid association (usually in conjunction with employee health insurance).
If your husband (wife) is not working for the company as of now, you will need to apply at the pension office in charge of your ward.

The insurance premium for the third insured is paid as a contribution from the pension system in which the spouse has joined to the national pension system, so there is no need to pay it individually. . You will not be deducted individually from your husband's (wife) salary.
In addition, even if the spouse of the second insured person is a spouse who is not dependent (in principle, if the annual income is 1.3 million yen or more), it will be the first insured person.

Those who have already submitted the third notification will no longer be the third insured in the following cases. If you are under 60 years old, do not forget to notify the ward office National Pension Plan Section. Please bring your My Number Card or a document that can clarify your basic pension number (in some cases, there are other required documents, so please contact us in advance.)
In addition, electronic application using the minor portal is also possible. For more information, please visit the Japan pension Organization website.

  1. When income increases and you are out of support
(If you join Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) yourself, you do not need to notify the ward office.)
  2. When divorced
  3. When a husband (wife) who is a member of Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) retires (unemployed)
  4. When a husband (wife) who is a member of Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) died
  5. When a husband (wife) who is a member of Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin) reaches the age of 65 and is eligible for pension due to old age.

For example, even if you are a third insured when you start working part-time, if you subsequently take out social insurance (Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin)), your third insured qualification will be interrupted. You need to be careful.
In addition, if you retire from the part-time job (excluding the application of Employee Pension Plan (Kosei Nenkin)) and become the third insured again, you will need to notify the husband's (wife) office again of the third insured person .
