About road occupation of protruding signboard

When protruding a signboard such as a store on the road, permission and private use fee are required.

What is the road occupation of a protruding signboard?

A specific person installs a protruding signboard above the road and continuously uses the road. In that case, permission from the road manager is required. Private use standards and private use charges are as follows.


What are the criteria for getting permission?

  1. The lower end of the signboard from the road surface must be 2.5m or more on the sidewalk and 4.5m or more on the road.
  2. The output width is 1.0m or less.
  3. It should not be similar to traffic lights or road signs.

Those that meet the standards must be approved by application and pay the private use fee.

Those that do not conform to the standards should be improved as soon as possible to properly use roads, which are public spaces, and to create comfortable road spaces.


How much is the private use fee?

Private use fees vary depending on the area of the property you occupy.

Occupational area (before decimal place)

(Exit width) X (length) x (Number of surfaces) = (Occupation area)
0.6m x 2.4m x 2 sides = 2.88m2 → 3.0m2

※ The area is calculated based on the display area, so it usually consists of two sides.

Private use charges (annual amount)

3,000 yen x 3.0m2 = 9,000 yen

What if you didn't get permission?

You may be punished according to the provisions of the Road Law. For proper use of the road, please apply for a permit application.

How do I apply for a permit?

Please submit the following documents to Public Works Office.

  1. Road occupation permission application

  3. Structural diagram of protruding signboard (drawing with width, dimensions, and ground height)

  4. Road occupancy fee reduction / exemption application form (in the case of individuals or small and medium-sized enterprises)

What if you're allowed?

Flow of private use permission

Road private use permit, delivery letter of advice will be issued. In addition, private use period is up to 5 years.
When period has expired, private use renewal application (road occupation permission application) is necessary.


What if there is a change?

In the case of abolition or change

Notification is required when the signboard is removed or the dimensions change.
