History of Kanazawa Wood Port

History of Yokohama Bayside Marina Area - Kanazawa Wood Port

Last Updated April 2, 2021

<History>

In the 1930s, when Japan as a whole was experiencing high economic growth, the amount of imports and exports of Yokohama Port increased sharply, and there was an urgent need to improve and expand port facilities, construction of the Yamashita-Futo was promoted, and the raft pool at the adjacent Shin-Yamashitamachi storage plant was greatly reduced. For this reason, a petition from a timber warehouse industry official for the establishment of an alternative storage plant was submitted to The Mayor of Yokohama, and the city of Yokohama, which received the petition, launched a study group in 1962 and reported that the Kanazawa district was the most suitable place for construction of a storage plant in 1938.
Furthermore, in the 1940s, the import volume of external materials increased further, and the Shinyamashita storage plant, which has a tree storage capacity of 26,000 tons, became too small, so a new timber port from a comprehensive perspective in the Kanazawa area was constructed.

<Construction work>

The construction of Kanazawa Timber Port began in 1970, and the quay was commissioned by Yokohama City as a dedicated wharf by goods, and the breakwater and the water surface were constructed by Yokohama City as an auxiliary project. . With the completion of the quay and cargo handling area in 1974, the service was started and the maintenance of marine waste incineration plants was promoted in parallel. In 1980, all facilities were completed and construction work was completed.

<When active>

Kanazawa Timber Port has handled about 150,000 tons of raw wood annually since its commencement of operation in 1974, and has been crowded with many wood imported from Southeast Asia, North America, Ro Shea, etc.
However, it changed from the time when raw wood was imported to the time when timber was imported in the country of origin, and the amount handled at Kanazawa Wood Port gradually decreased.

<Kanazawa Wood Port in a New Era>

The subsequent trend toward containerization and a decrease in imports of timber due to stagnant domestic demand resulted in forced Kanazawa Wood Port to change. While the quay is used for various purposes, such as car-only ships and building materials, the water storage and rearranged water surfaces are hardly used and become idle.
