About Designer
Shinko Wharf was built by the Ministry of Finance in 1899 by the "Yokohama Customs Land Union Equipment Construction", and at that time it was the first full-scale port facility in Japan equipped with sheds, warehouses, heavy machinery, railways, etc. The Akarengasoko was constructed as the first warehouse and the second warehouse during the second phase of construction, which began in 1906 under the supervision of the Temporary Construction Department of the Ministry of Finance. At that time, the Temporary Architecture Department of the Ministry of Finance was Yorinaka Tsumaki, and it is said that the German design of Akarengasoko was influenced by this Muki. Other works by Yorinaka Tsumaki include the former Yokohama Shokin Bank head office (currently the Prefectural Museum of History) in Basyamichi, Yokohama, as well as the Moji Customs in Kitakyushu.
