Countermeasures against new coronavirus infection when accepting cruise ships

Last update date June 13, 2023

In accepting cruise ships, Yokohama Port is working with shipping companies and related parties to take measures against the new coronavirus infection as follows.

Background

On September 18, 2020, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism released the "Study and Interim Report on Ensuring the Safety and Security of Cruises" and "Guidelines for Infectious Diseases in Cruise Ships and Host Ports," and the Japan Association of Extraordinary Passenger Ships Association (JOPA) published industry guidelines and other guidelines.
In addition to complying with these guidelines, Yokohama City has decided to confirm measures against infectious diseases such as "PCR inspection of all passengers before boarding", "deployment of a virus inspection system on board", and "arrangement of accommodation facilities and transportation in case of onboard infection", and resumed domestic cruise ships calling at Yokohama Port.
On November 15, 2022, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that it would resume accepting international cruises and other industry guidelines for international cruise operations. Coordinating conditions for acceptance with shipping companies and local related organizations, the Nippon Maru sailed on the first international cruise in Japan in about three years, and international cruises by foreign ships resumed in March 2023.
Subsequently, on May 8, when the position of COVID-19 under the Infectious Diseases Control Law was changed from Class 2 infectious diseases to Class 5 infectious diseases, industry guidelines were abolished and revised in principle.

Current Initiatives

Currently, ship companies are taking voluntary measures against in-vehicle infection based on the Japan International Cruise Council (JICC) Guidelines for Preventing the Spread of Infection for International Cruises". In addition, at passenger terminals and other facilities, we are working on basic infection control measures, such as placing disinfection at boarding entrances.
We will continue to accept safe, secure and smooth cruise ships, which will lead to the creation of bustle in the city's coastal area and revitalize the city's economy through tourism.

Due to the need to create an environment where international cruises can be enjoyed with peace of mind, we have revised the guidelines to take into account changes in the position of COVID-19 under the Infectious Diseases Control Law.
