In 1600 (Keicho 5), Ieyasu Tokugawa, who won the battle of Sekigahara, developed new policies one after another. The development of highways was also promoted as part of this, and in 1601 (Keicho 6), the Tokaido horse riding system was introduced. ※It was decided.
At that time, there were 37 post stations between Edo and Kyoto, and there were two hotels in Yokohama, Kanagawa-juku and Hodogaya-juku, but in 1604 (Keicho 9), Tozuka-juku joined, and three post stations in Yokohama were together.
In 1624 (Kanei Gen), 53 post stations were established between Edo and Kyoto, and became the 53rd Tokaido.
※Horse riding system: A system in which horses are transported in each post office.
