The origin and characteristics of Hodogaya-juku
Last Updated October 23, 2024
What is Hodogaya-juku?
In 1601, Hodogaya-juku was issued by the Shogunate with a document called "Denma Red Seal" issued by the Shogunate when the system of the inn station was established on the Tokaido, and was born as a post office certified by the Shogunate. Hodogaya-juku is the fourth post town following Shinagawa, Kawasaki and Kanagawa, about 33 km (8 ri 9) from Edo.
The role played by the post office was the reposition of horses and horses required for transporting luggage, the provision of lodging facilities for travelers, and the work of flying legs.
The highways were governed by the Shogunate. Hodogaya-juku is about 5 km from Shibamura Oiwake (now border with Nishi Ward) to Sakaiki Jizo (now border with Totsuka Ward). It was under the jurisdiction of Tozuka-juku in the south from Oiwake.
It was about 2 km that the cityscape was set up as a post town, and during this time it was called the inn. In the inn, Hatago, teahouses, and shops were lined up around Honjin, and it was bustling as a post town.

Gontazaka is the first difficult part of the old Tokaido.
The distance from Nihonbashi to Hodogaya is Hachiri Kucho (about 32 km). At the time when an adult man was said to have walked about 10 miles a day, the first accommodation was a little earlier.
However, it may have been just a good place to rest before crossing Gontazaka, which was the first difficult place after leaving Edo.
The old Tokaido route was changed on the way!
In fact, the route of the Tokaido was changed around 1648. The changed route is the route from Tennocho Station on the Sotetsu Line, passing National Route 1 to Motomachi Bridge.
At the time of its establishment in 1601, the post office was located near the former Motomachi Bridge at Hodogaya 3-chome, but in line with the route change, it moved to the area (approximately 2 km) from Tennocho Shopping Street to Togawa Shrine, and the location was now called Motomachi.
The reason for the route change and the route before the change are still not known exactly.
