Are any expenses related to studying abroad be eligible for assistance?
A

Of the expenses required for studying abroad or training overseas, the following are eligible for assistance. However, expenses paid by the end of February of the application year are eligible.

(1) Airfare (one round-trip fare to the final destination)
(2) Domestic transportation fares to the airport (one round trip ticket). A fixed amount of 500 yen one way to Haneda Airport and 2,000 yen one way to Narita Airport. )
(3) Airport tax, fuel surcharge, and departure procedures
(4) Procedures for obtaining visa (visa) and passport (passport) (excluding procedures for agency fees)
(5) Tuition fees, facility usage fees, etc. paid to foreign high schools
(6) Overseas travel insurance premiums
(7) Dormitory fees or homestay expenses to be paid to host families
(8) Participation in study abroad projects sponsored by other local governments, schools, private organizations, etc.
   (1) Project participation costs, including part or all of the costs listed in (7)

※These expenses do not include expenses related to private activities other than academic studies, such as selection fees for becoming a participant in a study abroad project (such as examination fees), expenses incurred before deciding to study abroad, pocket money at the study abroad destination, and pre-language training expenses.

When is the announcement of the subsidy grant decision?

Applicants will be notified in writing by mid-July if the schedule is an annual schedule.

Are students who have decided to receive subsidies or scholarships from other organizations eligible?
A

It is eligible.
In addition, those who have been subsidized by the youth support project aiming for the world, and those who are expected to receive assistance after the decision of assistance are not eligible.

Participate in an exchange program at the high school you are attending. High school is applying for the "Sister School Study Abroad Program", so I may receive a subsidy. Can I apply for "Individual Study Abroad" at the same time?

However, those who have been subsidized by the youth support project aiming for the world, and those who are expected to receive assistance after a decision to subsidize are not eligible, so "Sister School Program for Sister School" and "Individual Study Abroad" Can not be eligible for assistance.
In that case, only "Individual Study Abroad" will be eligible for assistance.

Study Abroad Programs for sister schools

Q
Children are high school students living in the city and participate in overseas training sponsored by the school. Can you tell me how to apply for a study abroad program at a sister school?
A

High schools or civic groups in the city can apply for a sister school study abroad program. It is not possible to apply by individuals.
In addition, after the study abroad program is selected, who of the program will be determined by the high school or citizen's organization to apply for this grant.

Can the grant granted be separated from other students in the program?
A

I can't do it. It is necessary to select a high school student who will be eligible for further subsidies from among the program dispatched students.
One of the judging criteria is whether the target high school students are widely recruited in the city and on campus, and whether they are properly evaluated and selected based on their grades and motivation.

The application guidelines states that "city high school students dispatched by the program should cooperate in widely presenting the results of overseas training and studying abroad to citizens at the request of Yokohama City" (page 2). Is it necessary to cooperate as a group and a high school?
A

Can a single high school or organization apply for multiple study abroad programs as sister schools?
A

If high school students are recruited and selected for each program and are implemented separately, you can apply for multiple programs.

Did the overseas study abroad system for 91 days or more that had been until FY2017 disappear?
A

From FY2018, the study abroad program for sister schools has been unified into one for study period of 7 days or more. If you are studying abroad for about one year at a sister school, you can also apply for an individual study abroad program. (However, as a result of the examination, if both pass, only "individual study abroad" will be eligible for assistance.)

Students who have graduated from a Japanese junior high school do not enter a Japanese high school, but will study abroad at a foreign high school. Are you eligible?
A

No, it's not eligible. High school students who live or study in the city are eligible.

I have met the application requirements, but I'm already abroad. Are you eligible?
A

Applicable if departing after April 1 of the recruitment year, it will be eligible.
However, the selection process includes conducting an interview in Yokohama City at the date and time specified by the city, and those who have not received an interview will not be eligible for the selection.

It has been decided that I will study abroad after April of next year. Are you eligible?
A

Those departing by the end of the following year (March 31) of the application year are eligible. However, please note that the subsidy will be for the expenses paid by the end of February of the application year.

Use the program of a private study abroad organization. Is the selection fee eligible for assistance?
A

Expenses incurred before deciding to study abroad, such as selection fees (examination fees), and pre-language training fees, etc. are not covered.

How much is "approximately one year"?
A

Please think that it is essential to complete one year's curriculum at your destination.
