In Yokohama City, based on the "Law Concerning the Promotion of Use of Wood in Public Buildings" promulgated in May 2010, the "Policy on Promotion of Use of Wood in Public Buildings in Yokohama City" was formulated in 2014 to promote the use of wood.
In June 2021, the law was revised to the "Law Concerning the Promotion of Use of Wood in Buildings for Contributing to the Realization of a Decarbonized Society," and the scope was expanded to all buildings, including private buildings. In this way, Yokohama City has newly formulated the "Policy on Promotion of Use of Wood in Yokohama City Buildings" and will continue to promote the use of wood in public buildings.

Public buildings maintained by the city

  • We will actively promote wooden construction in public buildings.
  • Promote the use of wood, such as interiors, focusing on areas that are considered to have many opportunities to be seen by citizens. (entrance hall, reception desk, lobby, corridor (waist wall, floor), etc.)
  • The timber used is as much as possible from Kanagawa Prefecture and local timber.

※Regional timber: Wood produced in the prefectures and Shizuoka prefectures belonging to the Kanto Koshin region
※If it is difficult to secure materials, domestic timber


Use of public building wood products, dissemination of advanced technologies, etc.

  • We also use wood as a raw material for various products such as building materials, equipment and consumables.
  • Take the initiative in the use and dissemination of advanced technologies, and actively disseminate information on the status and effects of such initiatives.

Public Building Environmental Consideration Standards

Environmental considerations required for public buildings maintained by the city are defined in the “Environmental Consideration Standards for Public Buildings in Yokohama City” to promote the development of public buildings that take into account the conservation of the surrounding environment.
Based on this standard, we will determine the amount of wood used in public buildings and promote the use of wood.

In addition, the following applicable uses and buildings shall not be included in the target floor area when calculating the amount of wood used (m3 / m2).

  • Facilities that are difficult to make wooden or wood due to laws and regulations such as the Building Standards Law and facility installation standards.
  • Facilities that are difficult to make wooden or wood due to the special features of the facility, security, maintenance, etc.
  • In addition, there are reasons why it is difficult to make wooden or wood.

However, even if it is difficult to make wood or wood, we will consider using wood for parts that are visited by citizens and used for general use, such as building entrances, reception counters, and facilities for visitors. We will strive to make woody.
