Introduction of Air Fire Brigade Activities
Last Updated October 1, 2019
The City of Yokohama, Fire Bureau Air Corps uses helicopter functions and mobility to conduct firefighting activities such as information collection, video transmission, rescue, fire extinguishing, public relations, and transport of emergency patients.
Information gathering activities
Information such as disaster status and damage status is very important for the participating fire brigade to be active. .
The aviation fire brigade supports ground activities by confirming and providing information on this information that cannot be confirmed from the ground from the sky.
- Confirmation of the spread of fire at the time of fire, danger of human life, rescuers, etc.
- Damage survey on major arterial roads such as buildings and national roads during the earthquake
- Damage survey of river flooding, landslides, etc. caused by typhoons, etc.
- Check the situation when dangerous goods are leaked from dangerous goods facilities, etc.
- Confirmation of the situation when it is difficult to confirm the disaster situation from the ground, such as a large-scale disaster or a traffic accident on a highway.
Helicopter TV Image Transmission System
The helicopter TV video transmission system can visualize the disaster situation at the disaster site in real time and transmit it to the command headquarters of the site, etc., and is an extremely effective system as a means of collecting information for various types of disaster response.
Rescue operations
The following rescue activities utilizing the characteristics of helicopters will be carried out at a wide range of rescue sites, such as flood accidents in rivers and the sea, accidents in mountainous areas, and rescue from rooftops in high-rise buildings.
Rescue by landing
If you can take off and land safely at a disaster site, land directly and rescue the rescuer.
Rescue by a whist
In mountainous areas where helicopters cannot land or in rescue operations, the helicopter is suspended in the air (hovered), and rescue workers and rescue stretchers are lowered and rescued using the whist device equipped on the aircraft.
Rescue by repelling
When helicopter landing is difficult, the helicopter is suspended in the air (hovered) and the rope tied to the aircraft is used to quickly descend and rescue the aviation rescue workers.
This method is an effective approach that allows multiple members to descend quickly and continuously.
Aerial fire fighting activities
When it is difficult to approach the fire point from the ground, such as a building fire, a ship fire, or a forest fire, fire fighting will be performed from the sky using a fixed aircraft fire extinguisher (fire attack) or a fire extinguishing bucket.
Fixed fire extinguishing equipment (fire attack)
A tank device is installed at the bottom of the helicopter's fuselage, and water and fire extinguishing agents are added to extinguish the fire from the sky.
Using a self-suction pump, self-suction can be performed from dams, ponds, rivers, etc., and fire extinguishing can be repeated.
Fire extinguishing bucket
The fire extinguishing bucket is hung on the off-air suspension device (cargo hook) at the bottom of the helicopter aircraft to extinguish the fire from the sky.
Transport of goods
Materials can be transported from the sky to places where transportation from the ground has become difficult, such as when land routes are cut off due to disasters such as earthquakes and heavy snowfall.
Transport of goods using an off-air suspension device (cargo hook)
※I use an image of an old helicopter.
In addition to the method onboard the aircraft, an off-air suspension device can be used to transport goods by hanging at the bottom of the aircraft.
Emergency transport
In the event of an accident in an area that requires long-term transport to the hospital, or when long-distance transfer is required for emergency surgery, etc., an emergency equipment mounting device will be installed on the aircraft to transport patients.
We also transport doctors, nurses, etc. to disaster sites.
Public Relations Activities
In areas where disasters occur, we will provide a wide range of information from the sky using off-air loudspeakers equipped with information such as evacuation warning, evacuation orders and evacuation guidance attached to the aircraft.
In addition to disasters, we also conduct fire prevention publicity, etc. as necessary.
Other Activities
The activities of the City of Yokohama, Fire Bureau Air Corps are also used in administrative surveys such as aerial photography necessary for administrative purposes. In addition, we carry out activities inside and outside the prefecture based on various support agreements as well as activities in Yokohama city.
