About necessary/required procedures

Dogs older than 91 days are required to register their dogs (once a lifetime) and rabies vaccination vaccination (once a year) based on the Rabies Prevention Law. In addition, dogs that have registered and injected are required to attach dog's license tag and injected votes on collars.

Last Updated March 14, 2024

When you register your dog, you will receive a dog dog's license tag (silver metal plate).
Have your registered dog receive rabies vaccination once a year and receive a rabies vaccination vote. Be sure to attach your dog's dog's license tag and rabies vaccination vote to your dog's collar.
Registration of dogs and issuing injection slips can be performed at animal hospitals commissioned by Health and Welfare Center and Yokohama in each ward.
The fee is 3,000 yen for registration and 550 yen for injected votes.
For more information, please see the procedures for dog registration and rabies vaccination procedures at the Yokohama Animal Protection Center.

About microchip installation and information registration

From June 1, 2022, it is mandatory to install and register microchips to dogs and cats sold.
For general owners, wearing microchip is mandatory. However, if a new microchip is attached to a dog or cat bred at home, or if an individual already equipped with a microchip is transferred, the system of the designated registration organization designated by the Minister of the Environment Registration or change registration is mandatory.
For more information, please see About microchip installation and information registration of the Yokohama Animal Protection Center.

As for the registration of domestic dogs, dogs registered after April 1995, their registration is valid for a lifetime anywhere in the country.
If the owner's name or the dog changes, the owner changes, or if the Address land changes (if you move), you will need to change it.
Please report the change at the department in charge of rabies prevention (where you move to).
If you have been transferred to Tsuzuki Ward  , please apply at the Tsuzuki Health and Welfare Center Health Sanitation Division Environmental Sanitation Section.

Necessary items for the change procedure

  • dog's license tag, published in the previous Address
  • rabies vaccination Certificate issued in that year
  • If you have received an injection vote in the previous Address area, you will receive an injection vote for that year.

If you bring the dog's license tag in the former Address area, you can exchange it with dog's license tag in Yokohama for free.
If you lose your dog's license tag, you will need to re-issue the dog's license tag, which will cost you 1,600 yen.
Fees are free of charge for changes that do not involve dog's license tag reissuance.
Also, if you did not receive the injection slip for that year in the previous Address area, please complete the grant procedure at the same time. The fee is 550 yen.
In addition, please report at window in the case of injection not inoculated.

※Caution※
Dogs older than 91 days and have a microchip may be registered with a local government other than Yokohama City. As you confirm the presence or absence of registration, please refer to Yokohama-shi animal protection center.

If your dog is missing, first look for your neighborhood, your usual walking place, and where your dog likes. At the same time, please inform the nearest ward office or police department as soon as possible about the date and time when the dog was gone. The ward office can provide information about dogs protected in the ward. Also, you may be protected by citizens and veterinary hospitals, so let's look for everything.
If you attach a dog's license tag or injection slip to your dog, you can contact the registered owner from the ward office if protected. Be sure to attach your dog's license tag and injected votes to your dog in case you get lost.
Surprisingly few people can tell the characteristics of their dog without looking at the dog. Keep photos and records in case of emergency.
