kitchen garbage Composting Project

kitchen garbage accounts for about 30% of garbage from households. We make such kitchen garbage as compost and use it in the flower bed of Seya Hongo Park! Why don't you bring colorful flowers to the flower bed in the park with compost made from kitchen garbage from your home?

Last Updated May 31, 2024

Overview of the project (from composting to making flower beds)

To all the participants

①Composting kitchen garbage at home

②Making flower beds in Seya Hongo Park using completed compost

I'll do it.

①kitchen garbage composting at home

Flow of Composting

1 We will hand the bag-type compost required for composting from the ward office. Put the base material (a material that promotes fermentation of kitchen garbage) into a bag-shaped compost.

2 Put kitchen garbage and stir. It is available to put up to 3 bowls (about 400g) of bowls per day. You don't have to stir when kitchen garbage didn't come out.

3 Repeat kitchen garbage's input and stirring for about 2 months.

4 After the kitchen garbage input period, ripen for about 3 weeks to complete the compost.

②Making flower beds in Seya Hongo Park using completed compost

※The photo shows a flowerbed using compost created last year.

The completed compost will be used to make flower beds in Seya Hongo Park.
After the maintenance of the flowerbed, a bulb planting event will be held again at a later date!
Let's fill the flower bed in the park with colorful flowers!

"Is it possible for me to make compost?" To those who are worried about participating

"What is Compost?" "What kind of kitchen garbage can I put in?" "I'm worried if I can do composting because I've never done it at all."

We will answer the concerns and questions of those who are not sure about participating in the project!

 FAQs
What is Compost?

A container that ferments and decomposes kitchen garbage using the action of microorganisms.
This time, we will lend you a bag type that is easy to carry and does not take a place.

Where should I put the compost?

Place it in a well-ventilated outdoor area, such as a garden or veranda that is less likely to rain.
Bag-type compost is not large in size (50cm wide x 21cm deep x 37cm high), so it can be practiced on a small veranda.

What can kitchen garbage put in? Also, what can't be put in?

Vegetable waste, egg shells, meat and fish, coffee and tea husks, sweets, etc. can be put. In addition, you can put food leftovers, expired food, and moldy ingredients and reborn as compost!
Shells, chestnut skins, corn cores and skins are not decomposed or decomposed lately is not recommended. Items that cannot be put in are flowers, grass, fallen leaves, pet droppings, etc.

When you put kitchen garbage, you can stir it, but do you have to stir it every day? Please stir in the compost when you put kitchen garbage in. You don't need to mix when you're out on a business trip or travel, or when you don't have kitchen garbage to go out.
Is it okay with the smell?

If you follow the inputs and usage of kitchen garbage, the smell of compost placed outdoors or on the veranda will not come into your home room or disturb your neighborhood.
Rather, composting eliminates the amount of dumping kitchen garbage, which means kitchen garbage's measures to prevent rot odors in kitchens and trash cans.

I've never used compost at all, but can beginners do it easily?

Just adding kitchen garbage and mixing it, it is easy for beginners to do. In addition, we will hold startup courses and follow-up courses to support progress so that even beginners can work with peace of mind.
In addition, those who cannot participate in the course can consult with the instructor on SNS etc.

Can I get the bag-shaped compost you gave me as it is?

After this project, only those who want to continue using bag-type compost will be given as it is. However, if the base material to be placed in bag-type compost is continued after this project, it is necessary for the participants to prepare their own.
If you do not wish to continue, you will be required to return a bag-type compost at the end of this project.

Last year's lecture and flowerbed making

Here are photos of the kitchen garbage Composting Project conducted last year!
The following two pages show the course implementation. This year, from how to use bag-type compost to follow up on the progress of composting, we will carry out a total of three times this year.

The following two photos are photos of making flower beds using the completed compost. Last year, we planted tulip bulbs on the flowerbed of the pedestrian deck at Mitsukyo Station.

There is a wonderful tulip in spring! This year, the place where the completed compost will be used will be moved to Seya Hongo Park, but as in the previous year, tulips will be planted.
