What is dementia?

Dementia is a disease in which the function of the brain is impaired, unlike mere forgetfulness. Atrophy of the brain and cerebral infarction interferes with daily life.
Dementia can be treated depending on the type and may slow down the progression. Therefore, it is important to visit a medical institution as soon as possible.

In order for the person to spend calmly, the point is how to treat and speak in consideration of the person's life so far.
Minami Ward has created the Dementia Haya Understanding Guide (PDF: 4,992KB), which describes consultations and prevention regarding dementia. It is distributed at the Minami Ward Office and the Regional Comprehensive Support Center in Minami Ward (8 community care plazas in the ward).
In addition, in Yokohama City, there is a "Yokohama City forgetful health check-up" that allows citizens aged 50 and over to receive it once a year free of charge (from April 1, 2023, the target has been expanded so that health check-up can also receive it.) 。
It is said that one in five elderly people will have dementia. I recommend taking the health check-up once a year.

Let's prevent dementia

Isn't it a reserve army for dementia?

The state of the reserve army before dementia is called MCI (mild cognitive impairment). It is a condition in which cognitive function is lower than the age.
Let's train the three functions of the brain to prevent dementia.

  • Training the "Caution Split Function": Perform multiple tasks in parallel
  • Training "planning power": Think about procedures and arrangements
  • Train "memory of events": Doing work that reminds me of a few days ago

Effective efforts to strengthen the brain

  • Move your body while using your head
  • Prevention of dementia through "connection"
  • Eat well-balanced, cook, and make your brain and body lively.

Specifically, please see "dementia haya understanding guide (PDF: 4,992KB)".
