About dementia

What is dementia?

 Dementia is a disease in which the function of the brain is impaired, unlike mere forgetfulness. Due to atrophy and cerebral infarction, it interferes with daily life.
 Dementia can be treated depending on the type and may be slowed down. Therefore, it is important to go to a medical institution as soon as possible.
 
 In order for the person to spend calmly, the point is how to treat and call out in consideration of the person's life so far.
 In Minami Ward, we made "dementia haya understanding guide (PDF: 1,959KB)" which published about consultation and prevention about dementia. It is distributed at the Minami Ward Office and the Regional Comprehensive Support Center in Minami Ward (8 community care plazas in the ward).
 In addition, in Yokohama City, there is "Yokohama City Forgetfulness health check-up" that citizens aged 50 and over can receive it once a year free of charge (from April 1, 2023, those aged 50 to 64 can also receive health check-up.) 。 
 One in five elderly people is said to be in an age of dementia. It is recommended to take health check-up once a year.
 

Dementia Supporter Training Course

 This is a course to train "dementia supporters" who watch over people with dementia and their families in order to create a town where people can live with peace of mind in the community even if they have dementia. Dementia caravan mate serves as a lecturer and is held in the community.

Let's prevent dementia

Do you have a dementia reserve army?

 The condition of the reserve army before dementia is called MCI (mild cognitive impairment). The cognitive function is lower than the age.
 Let's train three functions of brain to prevent dementia.

  • Training the “Caution Split Function”: Multiple tasks are performed in parallel
  • To train “planning skills”: Consider procedures and arrangements
  • Train "Memory of Events": Work to remember two or three days ago

  • Prevention of dementia through "connection"
  • Eat well-balanced, cook, and keep your brain and body lively

Forgetfulness consultation

 Interviews by specialists, social workers, public health nurses, etc., or consultations through visits. We provide proposals and support for medical care and nursing care so that family members who care can deepen their knowledge and understanding of dementia.

For those who care for people with dementia

Minami Ward Support Network for Elderly People with Dementia

 When an elderly person with dementia who is unable to return home is protected, information can be registered in advance so that they can identify themselves immediately. This is a system that provides information on elderly people with dementia in advance to police. The purpose is to detect early when the person goes missing.
 What is required at the time of pre-registration is as follows.

  • Applicant private seal
  • Photograph of the person (upper body and whole body)
  • emergency contact number (name: Address, Phone number)

 Reception is accepted at the Minami Ward Office Elderly and Disabled Support Division (23rd floor on the 2nd floor) or the Regional Comprehensive Support Center in your area.
