What is Satoyama?

Explanation image of Satoyama

Listening to "satoyama": rice fields, fields, and leaves of trees swaying in the wind. The sound of a wild bird, the voice of the frog. It may vary from person to person.

Although it is a word that has been spoken for a long time, it has gained citizenship in recent years. Appeared for the first time in the 5th edition of Koujien, it is described as "mountains and forests near human villages and connected to people's lives". It is used to represent the whole area.

Until the 1930s, firewood and charcoal were used in Yokohama City to cook and warm up. We planted cedar and cypress to build a house, made baskets and columns, and tailored bamboo grove to pick bamboo shoots. Farmers call forests that obtain firewood charcoal, so-called coppice forests and cedar and cypress forests, are called "yama." The starting point of "Satoyama" was probably "Yama". It has come to be spoken as a concept of the landscape itself in which "Yama", fields (Nora), and a place of life (mura) are united in one area.

In Yokohama, the scenery of "Tando" is a representative of satoyama. Tando is a place where the flow of water has eroded the earth over a long period of time and enters like a folds. The hills were covered with coppices and cedar forests, and the flat part of the valley used abundant water and rice fields were lined up. In Midori Ward, it can be seen slightly, and there are places where the name of the bus stop named "XX Tando".

The charm of Satoyama

In the past, "Satoyama", a variety of environments were created. Artificial forests such as cedar and cypress, coppices, bamboo grove, rice fields, fields, grasslands (kayaba), banks, livestock huts, and houses. There was very natural nature around the house. As a result, the "work" that people were doing to live has nurtured diverse lives and "nature". Enjoy the blessings of crops and energy sources while maintaining a good balance of nature. In order to create a sustainable society, there are many things that shape the satoyama landscape and how to live.

The keywords are various "was".

The ring of life surrounding ecosystems, the seasonal rings, and water circulation. In addition, the management cycle of coppice forests is included. Once every 10 to 20 years, the coppice forest cuts down oak, oak, oak, and yamazakura, and uses it for wood charcoal and mushroom cultivation. The cut strain buds from the side and grows to a size that can be used again in more than 10 years. Sustainable utilization can be achieved by managing the trees while paying attention to the life of trees. The well-maintained coppice forest has a brighter forest floor and increases the number of plants such as violets and mountain lilies. There are many insects that use such places, and beetles and stag beetles, which were familiar playmates, can be said to be representatives of coppice forests.

Rain soaks in the forest and moisturizes Tando as spring water. On the waterside there are Hotokedo loach, Genji fireflies and Japanese Freshwater Crab that live only in clean water. If there is a rice field, many dragonflies will be born. Some dragonflies spend time in coppice forests after they emerge, and some frogs also live in coppice forests. The space with rice fields and coppices is a place where creatures are full of creatures.

Flowers of satoyama

A cycle of reuse and recycling that does not emit garbage. Nowadays, plastic products are flooded, but packaging materials and materials were made of materials that return to the soil. For example, rice straw is used for ropes and mulching spread in fields, and when it gets old, it is turned into compost. Even now, it is an important resource for farmers.

The connection between people will be both the local circle and the sum.

Satoyama has created a variety of environments as a result of the wide variety of work of farmers. Subsequently, a lot of people may be involved. Regardless of age or gender, it has the potential to engage in activities as part of "comprehensive learning", lifelong learning, occupational therapy and recreation. In addition, it will be an opportunity for people to regain their relationship with nature, and it will also be an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between people. Now that the local community has faded, I feel that reviving a lively satoyama will also rebuild a relationship that connects many smiles. Not only that, it also has the meaning of inheriting the culture cultivated by the climate, such as annual events, numerous wisdom and techniques, local festivals, and etiquette.

Recently, volunteer activities to care for forests and rice fields have become popular in parks, Shimin-no-Mori, and contact forests.

Manners of walking around the village

The satoyama landscape in Midori Ward is located in parks, Shimin-no-Mori, and contact forests, as well as farms. It used to be a landscape that used to be everywhere, but now it is scarce. However, the number of visitors is increasing year by year. It is a state of "overuse" that exceeds the allowable amount for the limited satoyama nature.

When strolling around the satoyama, take a compassionate feeling together. For those who sweat there and the small creatures. After learning manners, let's go out on a satoyama walk.
