Overview of Town Development Utilizing History
Yokohama has been home to modern architecture, Western-style buildings, and civil engineering heritage since its opening. In the suburbs, there are old private houses and shrines and temples that convey the taste of rural areas. In order to reevaluate these historical assets, position them as resources for urban development, and actively utilize them with the conservation, we implemented the “Guidelines for Town Development Utilizing History” in 1988.
With the cooperation of the owner, the purpose is mainly to utilize the exterior of the building while preserving the appearance of the building, and we are promoting "registration" and "certification" based on the outline. Certified historic buildings can be subsidized for renovation and maintenance of the conservation exterior.
In 1997, we established a subsidy program for seismic retrofitting (structural reinforcement) and in 2022, we also established a subsidy program for renovation. If possible by coordinating with the owner / related bureau, Yokohama City has acquired a historic building and plans to open it as a citizen use facility.
