Outline of Major Initiatives
Last update date February 28, 2023
Overview
Background and Purpose
The average temperature in Yokohama is on the rise due to global warming and the heat island phenomenon.
In recent years, summer heat has been hit, and the effects on health hazards such as heat stroke have become more serious, and there is a need for further adaptation to the heat.
Because it is necessary to promote heat measures to adapt to such climate change effects, the Institute of Environmental Science conducts city temperature observations and thermal environment surveys.
What is the heat island phenomenon?
The heat island phenomenon is a phenomenon in which the temperature in urban areas is higher than in suburban areas.
For more information, see What is the Battery?
City temperature observation
We conduct temperature observations at multiple elementary schools in the city to understand the heat situation in the city, which has become hot due to global warming and the heat island phenomenon.

Thermal environment survey
In order to understand the current hot environment and create a comfortable space for citizens to adapt to heat, we surveyed the actual conditions of heat in urban areas where many people gather, introduced measures before and after the introduction of heat measures before and after the introduction of heat measures We are verifying the heat mitigation effect by comparing places that are not as places.
