Creation and development of a good landscape using street trees (commonly known as Ikiiki Street Tree Business)

Last Updated March 22, 2023

From 2009, based on the "Yokohama Green Up Plan", the "Ikiiki Street Tree Project" has begun to increase the pruning frequency of street trees (Takagi).

What is the Ikiiki Street Tree Business?

There are many opportunities for citizens to see, and in order to nurture street trees that contribute to the improvement of the aesthetics of the cityscape, we will add maintenance such as pruning to normal maintenance and carry out. In addition, we will further enhance management such as mowing in the coastal area of the city center.

Positioning of Business

The “Yokohama Green Up Plan [2019-2023]” from FY2019 includes nurturing forests that will lead to the next generation with citizens, creating a place where citizens can feel close to agriculture, and create greenery and flowers that citizens can feel. There are three pillars of the plan. The contents of the “Ikiiki Street Tree Business” so far have been taken over in the “Yokohama Green Up Plan [2019-2023]”, and in the efforts to create greenery and flowers that citizens can realize.・ It is positioned as one of the “cultivation” business (creation and upbringing of good scenery by street trees). Road and Highway Bureau continues to use its existing business name (Ikiiki Street Tree Business) as its common name.
In addition, we carry out this business using a part of financial resources of "Yokohama green tax".

Business History and Policies

Until now, in the “Street Tree Management Business” budget, Takagi could only be pruned once every few years (about once every five years on average for the entire city area). For this reason, strong pruning was often forced, resulting in not only unsightly tree shapes and landscapes, but also damaged and weakened trees to cut thickly.
In this project, the pruning intervals will be shortened for the routes selected for each ward to take the tree shape and create beautiful trees and cityscapes. In addition, tree can be managed finely, suitable to make the tree healthier.

Initiatives to create beautiful tree shapes

In this project, we are working to increase the frequency of pruning to reduce the damage to trees, and to systematically capture the tree shape.

◆Examples of Initiatives

Ginkgo pruning plan

●Preparation of Pruning Plan

We make basic pruning plan about route targeted for business.
Plans such as the target tree shape and pruning method so that the size and shape of the tree matches the space of the place, surrounding conditions, and tree species.

●Information Session

We invite street tree pruning person (outside site) instructor as lecturer and hold briefing session for supplier who actually perform pruning or staff of city in charge.

●Sample pruning (trial cut)

Prior to pruning work, sample pruning (trial cutting) is performed based on the pruning plan, and a sample tree shape (sample of tree shape).

After that, under the guidance of a street tree prunner (outside site), pruning work will be performed based on the sample tree shape.

In addition, after pruning, photos of typical trees will be photographed and recorded, and used as a reference for the next pruning.

It takes several years to reach the shape of the tree.

If the tree needs to be recreated into small pieces, it may be strong pruning (cutting thick branches and trunks).

Beautiful road scenery

In order to further improve the aesthetics of road planting, we are also enhancing maintenance work such as mowing in some areas, such as the coastal area of the city center.
