Measures to raise the roots of street trees

Last update date June 16, 2020

When renovating a bumpy sidewalk for "rooting up" by street trees, a special soil that allows the roots of the street trees to grow well under the pavement, which is friendly to people and street trees. We are starting to work on renovation.

What is the "rooting" of street trees?

As the street trees grow, the roots grow thicker, causing the roots to lift the curbs and pavements on the sidewalk, causing a "root rise" in which the sidewalk bumps. As a result, pedestrians, especially the elderly, wheelchairs and strollers, are hindered, and this has become a problem in various places.
In the past pavement renovation, simply cutting the roots and then replacing only the pavement, but this method weakens the street trees and in the worst case, there is also a risk of falling trees by weakening the street trees and in the worst case there was. And even when it grew well, it sometimes rose again after a few years.

Why is "rooting up"?

The soil under the road is hardly made so that the pavement does not break. Street trees try to stretch their roots in order to take in air and water, but they cannot grow easily because the soil is too hard and lack of air, water and nutrients.
Therefore, trees grow their roots along the curbs where there is air and water, above the ground, and along curbs, and grow thick and push up pavements and curbs.

Characteristics of construction

While giving the necessary strength to the pavement, a special soil with gaps that allow roots to grow underneath the pavement while giving the necessary strength to the pavement. These gaps have air, water, and nutrients, so you can stretch your roots deep into the ground.
This new construction method allows trees to grow healthy and make it harder for the roots to recure, making it a sidewalk that allows pedestrians to pass with peace of mind.

Method of selecting refurbished routes

This is a route that preserves street trees in the future, and mainly targets narrow sidewalks that hinder traffic. In particular, priority is given to routes in the following situations:

  • A narrow sidewalk where you can't walk away from the root.
  • A sidewalk with a large degree of rooting
  • Routes with large pedestrian traffic
  • Street trees that have a strong attachment to local people
