Measures to raise the roots of street trees
Last Updated November 8, 2024
When renovating a bumpy sidewalk to "root up" by street trees, a special soil that allows the roots of the street trees to grow well is created under the pavement, and a sidewalk that is friendly to people and street trees We are starting to renovate.

▲A special soil is provided under the pavement.
What is the "rooting" of street trees?
As the street trees grow, the roots grow thicker, causing "root up" in which the roots lift up the curbs and pavements of the sidewalk, and bumping the sidewalk. As a result, pedestrians, especially the elderly, wheelchairs and strollers, have hindered the passage of pedestrians, which has become a problem in various places.
In the past pavement renovation, after simply cutting the roots, only the pavement was replaced, but in this way, the street trees were weakened, and in the worst case, the danger of falling trees could be caused by dead. did. And even when they grew well, they sometimes rose again in a few years.
Why does "root up" happen?
The soil under the road is made hard so that the pavement does not break. Street trees try to grow roots to take in air and water, but they cannot grow easily because the soil is too hard and the air, water, and nutrients are scarce.
Therefore, the trees extend roots in areas with air and water, above the ground, and along the curbs, and become thicker and push up the pavement and curbs.
Characteristics of construction
A special soil (root system guidance pressure-resistant base material) with gaps where the roots can grow is provided under the pavement while giving the necessary strength for the pavement. There are air, water, and nutrients in this gap, so you can extend the roots deep into the ground.
With this new construction method, trees can grow healthy and the roots are less likely to recur, making it a sidewalk that allows pedestrians to pass with peace of mind.
Method of selecting refurbishment routes
It is a route that preserves street trees in the future, and mainly focuses on narrow sidewalks that hinder traffic. In particular, we give priority to routes in the following situations.
- A narrow sidewalk where you can't walk away from rising roots
- Sidewalks with a large degree of root rise
- Routes with a large number of pedestrians
- Street trees with strong attachment to local people
