Special Lecture -100 Years after the Great Kanto Earthquake

Outline of the lecture

The Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in 1923 caused unprecedented damage here in Yokohama as well. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak. While following the records and lessons learned from that time, we will share with you the policies and philosophy of Yokohama City, which has been aiming to create a safe and secure city that is resistant to disasters.

Questions and answers to the instructor

Q Is there a way to raise awareness about toilet problems and countermeasures in the event of a disaster in neighborhoods and Neighborhood Associations?

A The toilet problem is not only in the event of a disaster, but also for many people, and it is important to respond and prepare according to your own excretion style from normal times. Stress, lack of water, and bias in food during disasters lead to constipation, difficulties in bowel movements and lack of toilet booths hinder health, and are also related to death for elderly people with diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Why don't you hold a study session on "Thinking about food and toilets" at the Neighborhood Associations unit of Neighborhood Association, or at home disaster prevention staff and evacuation center management committee members? As a specific content that can be done right away, we recommend that you use the planters temporary toilet. During normal times, you can enjoy planting seasonal flowers and vegetable seedlings in vegetable planters. In the event of a disaster, you can transfer the planter's soil to a garbage bag and cover it with soil after excreting.

Q What should I do specifically to increase neighborhood power?

A In the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, 80% of the lives were saved by rescue and helping each other from collapsed houses nearby. I realize that the great power to increase "neighborhood power" lies in the morning and evening greetings. I think it is important to engage in activities where local people can see themselves, such as actively exchanging greetings or cleaning the fallen leaves on roads. In order to be worried and help everyone, we recommend that you be actively a greeting caller leader during normal times. This is a strong disaster prevention and community support measures.
