Temporary information on Yokohama infectious diseases

Hand, foot and mouth disease information

What is hand-foot-and-mouth disease?

With an incubation period of 3 to 5 days, a 2 to 3 mm vesicular rash appears in the hands, feet and oral cavity (sometimes elbow, knees, hips, etc.). The heat is much less than 38°C. It heals naturally in about a week, but in rare cases severe complications such as meningitis and encephalitis may occur. It is prevalent mainly in children, mainly in summer, but adults can also be infected. If you experience symptoms such as unwellness, headache or vomiting, or high fever, you need to see a doctor immediately.

Prevention and Measures

Alcohol disinfection is difficult to work, so frequent hand washing with running water and soap is important. Patient's stool contains the virus for a while, so wash your hands after the toilet, after changing diapers, and before eating.
