Labeling of allergic substances

Last Updated April 1, 2023

Labeling system for allergic substances

In Japan, the number of people suffering from food allergies has increased in recent years. Therefore, in order to avoid serious allergies, from April 2002, substances that are prone to allergies will be displayed on processed foods.

Among foods that have been found to cause food allergies, "Shrimp", "Kani", "Wheat", "Soba", "Egg", "milk", "peanuts", which have a particularly large number of onsets and severity, are required to be labeled by law and must be labeled. These seven items are referred to as "specific raw materials."

In addition, we recommend that 21 items that have suffered serious health hazards at a certain frequency in the past be displayed as much as possible by notification. (These are referred to as "equivalent to specified raw materials"). The raw materials displayed are subject to review depending on the actual situation.
