Until the Yokohama Film Commission is established

Yokohama has a long relationship with films, and in the Taisho era, a studio was set up in a corner of Motomachi Park, where many films were produced. It may be said that Yokohama's history as a location had already begun around this time. Since then, in the somewhat exotic city such as ports, Western-style architecture, and Chinatown, works by major domestic movie companies such as Nikkatsu, Shochiku, Daiei, Toho, Toei, were filmed, and various spots Has been taken up as a location.
In the past, when Director Masahiro Shinoda produced "Setouchi Moonlight Serenade", photography of Hikawa Maru and Yamashita Park, it was necessary to interact with several places to obtain applications and permission. In addition, the late director Juzo Itami wrote a column in the newspaper saying "I want the Yokohama Video City Declaration" and the Kanagawa Shimbun-sha published an article titled "A film commission in Yokohama!" The momentum for the establishment of a film commission has increased.
On the other hand, volunteers from private companies, filmmakers, film directors, etc. have gathered nationwide, and the “Film Commission Establishment Study Group” to establish a “Film Commission” in Japan. There was a course called “Aiming for Film City-The First Step of Yokohama Film Commission” was held, and the Yokohama Film Commission Business started on October 1, 2000.

[History of Film Commission]
The film commission was born in the late 1940s due to the need for cooperation between police and the Los Angeles area of the United States and state soldiers, highway Patrol, fire departments and national park caretaker. At that time, Hollywood's request to merely manage traffic and block roads, it was only to facilitate the activities of Hollywood. In the 1970s, many filmings began to seek reality, and demand for location filming increased. As a result, the need for film commissions increased, and in the 1990s, it was established one after another in the United States, the world's largest movie powerhouse, Canada, Australia, France, Spain, Mexico and Hong Kong.
In Japan, Japan's first film commission was established in Osaka in February 2000. Subsequently, it was established in Kobe and Kitakyusyu in September of the same year, and Yokohama began its business as the fourth film commission in Japan. Since then, many local governments have established film commissions.
