About the type of election

There are various types of elections, but they can be broadly divided into two categories: "national elections" and "local government elections."

National election: lower house general election, upper house ordinary election

Election of local governments (Yokohama City): Because the The Mayor of Yokohama election, Yokohama city council election, Kanagawa governor's election, Kanagawa prefectural assembly election term are different, the election time is also different. By-elections may be held due to vacancies of members of the Diet.

About the right to vote

The right to vote is one of the rights of the people guaranteed by the Constitution of Japan, and can be obtained by Japanese citizens aged 18 and over. However, in order to vote in the election, you must be registered in the municipality's electoral list.

About electoral list

The electoral list is registered four times a year (the 2nd of each month in March, June, September, and December) in the ward where you live. In addition, when there is an election, it will be registered temporarily.

In addition, if the following requirements are met, no special procedure is required to register in the electoral list.
 1 Have a Address in the area of the municipality where you live.
 2 A Japanese citizen who is 18 years of age or older
 3 A person who has been recorded in the Basic Resident Register of the municipality for at least three months from the day the resident certificate was created (for transfer notification, the date of transfer notification)

*1 Even if you are a transferee from outside the city and actually live, you will not be registered in the electoral list unless you submit a transfer notice and resident certificate has not been created.
*2 For those who have been transferred out of the city before registration, if they have been recorded in the Basic Resident Register for at least three months, they may be registered in the former Address area.
