2005 (2005) Agriculture and Forestry Census

Last Updated July 19, 2024

The Agriculture and Forestry Census (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Designated Statistics No. 26) clarifies the current situation and trends of agriculture and forestry in Japan, and prepares basic and comprehensive statistical data necessary for the promotion of agriculture and forestry administration. The survey was started in 1950 as the World Agricultural Census in 1950, and has been implemented every 10 years since 1960, including the Forestry Census. In the middle year, Japan's own agricultural census was implemented. This survey is the twelfth agriculture and the 6th forestry. From this time, the agricultural census and the forestry census will be integrated every five years. In this census, "agriculture" refers to performing cultivation, livestock raising, sericulture, and agricultural processing (using privately-produced crops as raw materials) for profit or self-consumption, and "farmers" refers to agriculture. Among households that operate, the total agricultural product sales amount for one year before the survey date is 150,000 ares or more, even if the cultivated land area is less than 10 ares or less than 10 ares, or less than 10 ares. Of these, households with a managed cultivated land area of 30 ares or more or a total agricultural product sales of 500,000 yen or more for one year before the survey date are referred to as “selling farmers”, and other households are referred to as “self-sufficient farmers”. Together, they are referred to as “total farmers”.
