2005 Agriculture and Forestry Census
The Agriculture and Forestry Census (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Designated Statistics No. 26) aims to clarify the current situation and trends of agriculture and forestry in Japan, and to prepare basic and comprehensive statistical data necessary for promoting agriculture and forestry administration. For the purpose, the survey was started in 1950 as the World Agricultural Census in 1950, and has been implemented every 10 years since 1960, including the Forestry Census. In the middle year, Japan's own agricultural census was carried out on its own.
This survey is the twelfth survey in agriculture and the sixth in forestry. From this time, the Agricultural Census and the Forestry Census will be integrated and implemented every five years.
"Agriculture" in this census refers to performing cultivation, livestock raising, sericulture, and agricultural processing (using self-produced crops as raw materials) for profit or self-consumption. Among households, the cultivated cultivated land area is 10 ares or more, or even if it is less than 10 ares, the total agricultural sales for one year before the survey date was 150,000 yen or more. Of these, households with a managed cultivated land area of 30 ares or more, or whose total sales of 500,000 yen or more for one year before the survey date are referred to as “sale farmers”, and other households are referred to as “self-sufficient farmers”. Both are called “total farmers”.
