Air pollution control in winter-Please cooperate in reducing NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions! ~

Last Updated November 12, 2024

Winter is a season in which the atmosphere is prone to spread locally, and the concentration of nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere is particularly high in the year. Nitrogen oxides cause the generation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in addition to health effects on the respiratory system. Businesses and citizens are working hard to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions on a daily basis, but in winter, we ask for your cooperation in further reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.
In addition, when using cars, please consider the environment, such as the use of low-emission vehicles and the practice of eco-driving.

Average NOx per month

[Reason why the atmosphere is easy to thrive in winter]
Normally, the ground surface absorbs sunlight and warms up, warming the air near the ground surface. This warm air rises, and convection occurs when mixed with cold air. However, in winter, the air near the ground surface can cool down and become cooler than the air above. This condition is called the "reversal layer of temperature". When a reverse layer is formed, the convection of the air is suppressed, the atmosphere is stabilized, and air pollutants tend to stay.

For those who use combustion equipment such as boilers

•Check the equipment and carry out frequent cleaning.
•Let's manage the operation with appropriate fuel consumption.
•Let's use high-quality fuel with low NOx emissions.
•When updating the combustion equipment, select a model with a low environmental impact.

Familiar initiatives to consider air pollution

•When requesting delivery of goods, etc., ask a company that is engaged in environmental initiatives, such as "We have obtained green management certification."
•When traveling, increase your options, such as using a bicycle or public transportation.
•When using a car, practice using low-emission vehicles and eco-driving, and stop idling at parking lots.

In order to improve the air environment, nine prefectures (Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa, Kawasaki, Chiba, Saitama, Sagamihara, Yokohama) cooperate to take measures against air pollution in winter. I am calling for Please refer to the Nine Prefecture City Aozora Network (outside site) for initiatives.
