Foreigners do not have family register, but if they give birth or die in Japan, they will be subject to the Family Registry Act, so they must submit a birth report or death report to the family register notification window of the municipality where they are located. This notification will be kept for 10 years.

When a child is born

Procedures for birth registration form when a foreigner gives birth in Japan

When a foreigner living in Japan gives birth in Japan, the following items must be performed:

  1. Submitted by birth registration form
  2. Acquisition of status of residence for children
  3. Application to the Government of Japan

Location to be notified

Please notify the Family Registry Division window of the municipality where you are registered as a resident.

Necessary belongings

  1. birth registration form and birth certificate (birth registration form paper is handed over with birth certificate if it is delivered at a medical institution)
  2. Mother and Child Handbook
  3. Parent's passport (only if you wish to indicate your parent's nationality on the certificate of acceptance)

Characters that can be used for the child's name

  1. Katakana (Please add romaji)
  2. Kanji (for countries whose names are written in kanji under the Japanese law)

When the family died

Procedures for death registration/death notification form when a foreigner died in Japan

death registration/death notification form must notify you within seven days from the date you become aware of the death.

What you need

  • Fire Burial Permit Application (at the window of Family Registry Division)

※The Fire Burial Permit Application shall be submitted to the counter together with death registration/death notification form. Fill out the fire burial permit application form with the deceased's nationality, current address, crematorium, etc. If there is no defect in the documents, a fire burial permit will be issued on the spot.
