How to apply and receive a My Number Card

What is My Number?

My Number is a 12-digit number that all people with resident certificate in Japan, including foreigners. It is used to confirm that personal information in multiple institutions is the same person's information in three areas: social security, tax, and disaster preparedness.

How to confirm my number

When you make resident certificate for the first time in Japan, you will be assigned a My Number and you will receive a Personal Number Notification to inform you of your My Number. My number is listed on the personal number notice, so you can check your own My Number.
If you don't have your personal number notice, you can display your My Number on a copy of resident certificate, so you can check it with a copy of resident certificate.
※Until May 25, 2020, we will inform you of your My Number using a notification card.

Benefits of making a My Number Card

  • You will be able to get copies of resident certificate and Seal Registration Certificate at convenience stores.
  • It can be used as an identity verification document for procedures.
  • It can be used as a document to prove your My Number when you need to show your My Number.
  • If you have registered a common name with resident certificate, your common name will be displayed on your My Number Card, so it will also be a proof of your common name.

How to apply by mail

The "My Number Card Grant Application" is included in the envelope that informs you of your My Number.
Paste your face photo on the application form, fill in the date and name, and place only the application form in an envelope.

How to apply from the Internet

You can read the QR code attached to the My Number Card Grant Application Form with a smartphone, etc., and apply for a photo of your face using an image taken with a smartphone etc.
If you do not know the QR code, you will be given an application with a QR code at the ward office Family Registry Division window in your current ward office.

How to receive your My Number Card

How to receive it when applying by mail or via the Internet

When your My Number Card is completed, we will send you a postcard of the notice, so please come to the ward office Family Registry Division in your ward to get your My Number Card.
Please bring the following when you receive it.

  • Notice of delivery (postcard of notice)
  • Resident Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate
  • 1 point, such as a health insurance card (the name and address of the person or the name and date of birth can be confirmed)
  • Notification card (if you have it)
