Promotion of Food Bank and Food Drive Activities

"Mottainai" of food to "thank you"

Last Updated March 25, 2024

The burnable garbage, which comes from households in Yokohama, contains 20,000 tons of untouched food per year. In Yokohama City, as an initiative to reduce food loss, we are working with food bank organizations to implement food drives at events and create an environment where food can be donated in familiar places such as retailers. Through this initiative, we will promote the habit of checking the inventory and expiration date of foods stored at room temperature, such as foods purchased at each home and those received at mid-year-end gifts, etc. We aim to reduce food loss by providing food drives as soon as possible.

What is a food bank?

A food bank is an organization or activity that collects food that can be eaten safely but is discarded from each household or company that handles food, and provides it to welfare facilities free of charge.

What is a food drive?

Food drive refers to activities in which unused foods that cannot be used up in each household and collectively donate them to food bank organizations and local welfare facilities and organizations.
Food collected by Resources and Waste Recycling Bureau is donated to local welfare facilities and those who need food through food bank organizations and the Japan National Council of Social Welfare.
