Promotion of Food Bank Food Drive Activities

"Mottainai" of food to "Thank you"

Last Updated March 25, 2024

burnable garbage, which is released from households in Yokohama, contains 20,000 tons of untouched food annually, which is called food loss. As part of this effort to reduce food loss, Yokohama City is working with food bank organizations to conduct food drives at events and other events and create an environment where food can be donated in familiar places such as retail stores. Through this initiative, we encourage the habit of checking the inventory and deadlines of foods stored at room temperature, such as foods purchased at each home and those received at mid-year and year-end gifts, and we aim to reduce food loss by providing food drives as soon as possible.

What is a food bank?

A food bank is an organization or activity that collects food that can still be eaten safely but is discarded from households and companies handling food, and provides it to welfare facilities free of charge.

What is a food drive?

Food drive is an activity in which unused food that cannot be used up in each household is brought in and collected and donated to food bank organizations and local welfare facilities and organizations.
Foods collected by Resources and Waste Recycling Bureau are donated to local welfare facilities and those who need food through food bank organizations and the Japan National Council of Social Welfare.
