Measures against strong winds

Last Updated January 14, 2022

In order to prevent strong winds on the ground, Yokohama Municipal Subway has installed wind anemometers at four locations along the railway line to measure wind strength at all times to ensure safe operation of trains.

Installation location of wind direction anemometer

Installation location

19% (7.7 km) of all Yokohama Municipal Subway lines (40.4 km) are ground sections, with wind anemometers installed at the following four locations.

  • Sekine Bridge (between Nakagawa and Azamino, on National Route 246)
  • Nippa Station
  • Kami-Nagaya Station
  • Sakaigawa Bridge (between Shonandai and Shimoiida, above Sakaigawa)

Subway bridge

There are two bridges in Yokohama Municipal Subway.

  • Sekine Bridge (between Nakagawa and Azamino, on National Route 246)
  • Sakaigawa Bridge (between Shonandai and Shimoiida, above Sakaigawa)

Both bridges are less susceptible to wind because the floor is concrete and ballast is laid on top of it, and there are walls next to it.

Driving regulations

Information from wind direction anemometers installed at four locations along the line is sent to the general command center from "wind speed of 15m / s or more".
Based on this information, the General Command Center will issue an alarm for each warning floor from the average wind speed of "15m / s or more", and implement driving regulations according to the warning floor.
