About Foster Parents

Foster parents welcome children who cannot live in their parents' home as members of the family and raise them in the foster home with warm affection.
Yokohama City promotes children in need of social care so that each and every one of them can live in a homely atmosphere.

About social care

The Children's Charter states, "All elementary school student is brought up at home with the right affection, knowledge and skills, and elementary school student, which is not blessed, will have an alternative environment." Article 2 of the Child Welfare Law stipulates that "the national and local governments, together with parents of elementary school student, have the responsibility to foster healthy elementary school student both physically and mentally."

Foster parent activities

For example,
・Raise infants and elementary school students until their parents can raise them.

Q1. How long does the child be entrusted to us?

When elementary school student is entrusted to a foster parent, the period varies depending on the situation of the parent, but there are long-term care (including marriage) and short-term care.
In the case of long-term care, the elementary school student reaches the age of 18, and in the case of short-term care, it may last several weeks to several years due to the circumstances of their parents.

Q2. Can a single person or same-sex couples become foster parents?

If you wish to have a special adoption, you will need to be certified by your couple.
In the case of foster parents, it is not possible to become foster parents because they are single or same-sex couples. Make sure that they meet the requirements for stabilization of life and the ability to properly raise children, such as "Is it possible to raise children and maintain their livelihood" and "Do you have knowledge and experience in raising children" Judge after.

Q3. Is there an age limit for foster parents?

Since the child care period can be long, it is necessary to consider that point.

There are no particular requirement, but it is desirable to have a living space where children can live comfortably.
Depending on the age of the commissioned elementary school student, it is necessary to prepare a dedicated room.

Q6. How long does it take from application to certification?

It takes about one year.
During that time, you will receive training and practical training, and acquire knowledge and attitudes as foster parents.
After an interview and investigation by children's guidance office, The Mayor of Yokohama will approve foster parent certification after approval by the Yokohama City Child Welfare Council Foster Parent Group.
