Radioactive material measurement of school lunch ingredients in nursery schools

Last update date April 1, 2024

Measurement of radioactive materials in school lunch ingredients

Purpose

In April 2012, the “New Standards for Radioactive Materials in Foods” (Standards stipulated in Article 11, Paragraph 1 of the Food Sanitation Law), which also considers the impact on children, is required to ensure the safety and security of foodstuffs used in school lunch.
Therefore, since August 2012, Yokohama City has been measuring radioactive materials in the main ingredients used in school lunch before eating, to ensure safety and security.
From April 2014, the method of selecting the measured ingredients has been changed and implemented.

Measurement method

We conduct radionuclides analysis using germanium semiconductor detectors for school lunch ingredients at one place per day (measured by the date provided by school lunch) for school lunch on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (excluding holidays, the year-end and New Year holidays and the next day).
