Location and terrain
Kohoku Ward is located in the northeastern part of Yokohama City, bordering Kawasaki City from north to northeast, adjacent to Tsurumi Ward in the east, Kanagawa Ward in the south, and Tsuzuki Ward and Midori Ward in the west.
With the expansion of the sixth city area in 1939, the Kohoku Ward was created by combining the seven towns and villages of Tsuzuki-gun, which were incorporated into Yokohama City, and the areas of Kanagawa Ward that had been incorporated earlier. Then, in 1969, the Midori Ward was divided into branches, and in 1994, the northwestern part of the ward was incorporated into Tsuzuki Ward by reorganizing administrative districts.
The area covers about 8.1 km north-south and about 6.9 km east-west, and generally forms a long rectangle from north to south. The area is 31.40 square kilometers, accounting for about 7% of the total area of Yokohama City, and is the fifth largest in 18 wards in the city. Topographically, it is located at the eastern end of the Tama Hills and consists of a gentle hill that surrounds the Kohoku Ward and a flatland that runs along the Tsurumi River and Hayabuchi River that meanders through the hills.
The transportation network is developed on all sides of the ward, with the Tokaido Shinkansen, Toukyu Toyoko Line, Sotetsu / Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line running north and south to connect to Tokyo, the JR Yokohama Line on the south, the Daisan Keihin Expressway on the west and the Municipal Subway Blue Line on the north side, and the Municipal Subway Green Line on the north side. Due to good traffic access, economic activities such as commerce and industry are thriving, and there are large-scale event venues, making it an area where various people gather. The population and the number of households are the largest in the city, and while the urbanization around Shin-Yokohama and other stations is progressing, there are still many nature, such as the Tsurumi River and citizen's forest, and the number of farmers involved in agriculture. There are many, blessed with abundant water and greenery.
