Position and terrain
Kohoku Ward is located in the northeastern part of Yokohama City, bordering Kawasaki City from north to northeast, bordering Tsurumi Ward to the east, Kanagawa Ward to the south, Tsuzuki Ward and Midori Ward to the west.
Kohoku Ward was created by combining the seven towns and villages in Tsuzuki-gun, which were transferred to Yokohama City through the sixth expansion of the city area in 1939, and the area of Kanagawa Ward, which was previously incorporated. Later, in 1969, the Midori Ward was reorganized, and in 1994, the northwestern part of the ward was incorporated into Tsuzuki Ward due to the reorganization of administrative districts.
The area extends about 8.1 km north-south and about 6.9 km east-west, and forms a long rectangular north-south. It covers an area of 31.40 square kilometers, accounting for about 7% of the total area of Yokohama City, and is the fifth largest in 18 wards in the city. Topographically, it is located at the eastern end of the Tama hills, consisting of gentle hills that surround the Kohoku Ward, and flatlands open along the Tsurumi River and Hayabuchi rivers that meander through the hills.
There is a transportation network on all sides of the ward. On the east side, the Tokaido Shinkansen, Toukyu Toyoko Line, Sotetsu / Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line run north to south to connect Tokyo, JR Yokohama Line to the south side, Daisan Keihin Expressway and the municipal Subway Blue Line runs on the north side. Due to good traffic access, economic activities such as commerce and industry are thriving, and there are also large-scale event venues, making it an area where various people gather. The population and number of households is the largest in the city, and while urbanization around the station, including Shin-Yokohama, is progressing, but many natures such as the Tsurumi River and Shimin-no-Mori are still preserved, and farmers engaged in agriculture. There are many, and it is blessed with rich water and greenery.
