Pet measures in the event of a disaster

Last update date April 23, 2024

Let's prepare for a disaster. A video for pet owners is being posted!

In recent years, awareness of disaster prevention has been increasing as various natural disasters have occurred, but preparations for disasters, including pets, are still not enough. Kohoku Ward Health Sanitation Division has created a disaster-prevention video for pet owners.
In the first and second parts, it will be about 3 minutes each, so please watch it if you are a pet owner.

The only thing you can protect your pet! Let's prepare for a disaster (Owner: Part 1)

What should I do with pets in the event of a disaster?

In the event of a disaster, first ensure your own safety. If the owner is safe, you will not be able to protect your pet.

The environment that can be selected varies depending on the scale of the disaster, the area and the situation of the disaster, and the passage of time since the disaster.
The owner should choose an appropriate breeding environment based on each situation.

  • Evacuation at home (if it is possible to live at home)
  • Accompany evacuation (when raising in evacuation shelter) (Note)
  • Relatives, friends, etc. at the facility

(Note) In principle, evacuation shelter should keep pets away from the residential area (temporary breeding place).

For more information, please see the Yokohama City Animal Protection Center page.

Please cooperate with the "Questionnaire" on pet preparation in case of disaster.

Kohoku Ward is promoting awareness of pet measures in the event of a disaster. Please cooperate with the questionnaire survey "[Kohoku Ward Limited] Questionnaire on Pets Disaster Preparation" (external site) in order to make better efforts and to review your preparations.

Create a My Timeline (evacuation Action Plan) in case of emergency.

My Timeline is your own evacuation action plan that is organized in chronological order according to the area where you live and family structure.
Check the hazard map (disaster prevention map) and if you live in an area where damage is expected, leave your pet at a temporary storage location in advance and take your pet so that you can evacuate immediately in case of emergency Let's make a timeline.

Pet training and health management

It is important to gain the understanding of other evacuees in evacuation shelter and to reduce animal stress.

Basic discipline

  • I am used to cages and carry
  • Can be excreted in a designated place
  • Don't bark
  • "Wait," "Sit down," "Sit down," and "Come."

Health management

Evacuation life is stressed and it is easier to get sick.

  • rabies vaccination (dog only) and various vaccinations
  • Prevention and elimination of filariasis
  • Prevention and extermination of parasites such as fleas and ticks
  • Keep the body clean (brushing, trimming, etc.)

Let's prepare a stockpile for your pet.

Prepare and store items that are related to the life and health of your pet.

  • Food and water (at least 5 days, preferably 7 days or more)
  • Prescribed food and prescription drugs
